Hi all. I'm not sure if I'm missing something very obvious, but with an almost filled grid (solely from down answers) I still have no idea what to do with the acrosses. Could I get a gentle nudge in the right direction?

Some across entries are ... variations of the answers to their clues. The variations often appear in crosswords, just not so many all at once!

Hi, the across answers are old, poetic alternatives to the modern answers, from an author much used by setters. There are also five character names (I to V) from a single literary work by the same author.
